Shipt App Review: A Breezy Grocery Delivery When You’re Horribly Sick

I still am sick.  I woke up this morning at 3am with my body in full purge mode.  It was not good, just believe me.  I spent the next several hours purging, feeling nauseous, and unable to  even keep water in my system.  At one point I even contemplated going to the ER.  I was fucking miserable.

Considering my condition, some soft foods like applesauce, grapes, and gingerale were sounding greaaaat.  Problem was, the thought of hopping in my car and driving 10 minutes to the local grocery store was painful.  It just wasn’t happening.  I could’ve hit my friends up and got something brought, but my girlfriend had a better idea, just get it delivered from a service like uber.  I don’t live in a major city, so I wasn’t optimistic about my prospects.  In Fort Myers / Naples Area.  Anyhow I googled ‘Grocery Delivery‘ and found Shipt and found that they covered my area and advertised grocery deliveries in a little as one hour..  Boom! I was in luck.  At that point, the basic forces of supply and demand took over. I need some survival supplies and my ass could not physically make it to the grocery story.  I didn’t really care what the price.

Groceries delivered in as soon as 1 hour. Sounds good.

Behold Shipt

Time to get this order of survival supplies started BUT first, pricing.  There were 2 plans to select from:

  •  $99 for a year billed all at once.
  • $14 per month, billed monthly.

Both plans include access to the platform (app) so you can make an order, and free deliveries on orders over $35.  To top it all off, you have 2 weeks to cancel (from my first experience, I have no plan to cancel).  Sign up was a breeze and anyone reading this blog can figure it out.  If you can’t figure it out, their support and live chat seemed responsive enough to help!

After that, it was time to download the app, and make an order.  The app is intuitive and super simple to use.  You select the store you want to shop from, in my area it was Publix, a major chain, and then select the items you want.  The items are marked up a bit from their store price, seemingly about 10% which I think is fair for the service.

At about 10:30am, I ordered some typical feel better stuff:

  • 1 gallon of water
  • 1 bag of ice
  • a package of applesauce
  • a  bag of grapes
  • 6 pack of powerade
  • 6 pack of gingerale

The total was around $31 and then I used the $15 off first order coupon, so I only paid around $16.

2 hours later, around 12:30 I got a call from my, ummm delivery specialist (?), concierege (?), driver (?), whatever you want to call the person delivering my groceries (survival supplies).  In an effort to help him find me, I went outside and walked downstairs as my condo building is bit tricky.  He was a polite kid, around 20, and offered to help me bring the groceries up stairs.  I tipped him $9 and that was that.  I indulged in my supplies which were a big help.  The gingerale soothed my stomach, and the grapes stayed down!  Quite frankly, if I were this sick a decade ago, I probably wouldn’t have survived!
